ATLANTA – Popular Atlanta restaurant, Murphy’s has the nickname “Where Virginia Highlands comes to meet” and it’s been a popular meeting place for over 25 years. The restaurant, which sits on the corner of Highland and Virginia Avenues is usually bustling and, always, sports a crowd outside of their distinct doorway. Once you cross the threshold of the restaurant’s signature yellow awning, the restaurant gives off a comfy and familiar vibe. According to some, the restaurant is the Atlanta version of “Cheers”; many of the guests are regulars and have been patrons of the restaurant for years.

Murphy’s was created to be a New York style deli but it has, since, morphed into a restaurant specializing in American Contemporary fare. Chef Ian Winslade calls the type of food served at Murphy’s a “very rustic, comfort food”. Previously, Winslade worked with W Hotels, BluePointe and the Here to Serve restaurants, who own Aja, Noche, Twist among others.

Chef Winslade came to Murphy’s about six months ago but he has been in the industry for about seventeen years; he began his career in England at a friend’s Country Inn. After working at the Inn for a couple of years, he moved to London to become an apprentice and has since lived in a number of cities in the United States, including NYC and LA. Although, he is a classically trained French chef; he also incorporates many influences from the Pacific Rim and the West coast style of cooking into his repertoire.

“Murphy’s is very interesting and always busy; I’ve found it to be a real challenge”, Winslade says of the restaurant.

Since the restaurant has such a loyal following, Chef Winslade is being careful to, not, completely revamp the menu; however, he is making strides to become more seasonal and more local. He thinks small changes should be deliberate and not too drastic because he wants the menu to “evolve” and not to suddenly “change”.

Winslade suggests the ½ Sandwich, soup and salad combination, he says this meal is the “anchor of their lunch” menu, that the soup changes daily and the salad can be modified many ways. Tons of regular customers come have lunch, daily, because of this offering. The restaurant offers ½ sandwiches in the grilled cheese, chicken and chicken salad variety. Winslade’s favorite sandwich is the braised brisket with caramelized onion and horseradish mayo served on a Ciabatta bun from Alon’s Bakery.

The chef claims that about three to seven days out of the week, the restaurant offers vegetarian soup and the salad is crafted with local, organic greens grown using the hydroponics method. This meal costs about $12, everyday at lunchtime.

The chef, also, recommends the restaurant’s signature homemade cookies. Murphy’s bakes their cookies, daily. They offer Oatmeal Raisin, Peanut Butter, Dark Chocolate and Chocolate Chip cookies. The cookies are $1 each and they may be warmed, by your server, just before you leave. Winslade suggests buying cookies for yourself and your friends, at least, three.

Murphy’s signature beverage is their freshly brewed Luzianne Iced Tea. Winslade thinks that if you want the full experience, you should order a glass of “Iced Tea” as your beverage. The tea is brewed fresh daily and it complements every meal served at Murphy’s.
