Fulton wants seniors to 'Join the Conversation' regarding strategies to meet growing senior needs

ATLANTA -- The Fulton County Housing and Human Services Department, Office of Aging wants seniors and their caregivers to participate in focus groups designed to plan strategies for meeting the growing needs of seniors.  The focus group meetings are designed to plan strategies to help seniors to age-in- place and maintain their independence.  Caregivers of more fragile seniors are also urged to participate in the conversations about program and service needs.

The Office of Aging will host four “Join the Conversation” meetings beginning  Monday, October 22, 2012.  The meetings will be held on the following dates:

Monday, October 22, 2012 – Helene S. Mills Senior Multipurpose Facility
10:00 AM – 12:00 PM & 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM

Wednesday, October 24, 2012 – Harriett G. Darnell Senior Multipurpose Facility
10:00 AM – 12:00 PM & 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM

Fulton County’s Helene S. Mills Senior Multipurpose Facility celebrates 10th anniversary

ATLANTA -- The Helene S. Mills Senior Multipurpose Facility is celebrating 10 years of service to Intown Atlanta Seniors.  The Fulton County facility, named for Atlanta native and community activist Helene S. Mills, opened on Tuesday, September 17, 2002.

A 10th Anniversary celebration scheduled for Friday, September 21, 2012 from 7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. will feature an elegant evening of dining and dancing.  The Mills Senior Multipurpose Facility is located at 515 John Wesley Dobbs Avenue, Atlanta, Georgia. 

Open from 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, the facility offers a low cost breakfast and lunch, classes and social activities, aerobics/arthritis therapy, aquatics and other services that enrich the minds, bodies and spirits of seniors age 55 and over.  All Fulton County seniors are eligible to use the facility regardless of where they live.

Performance schedule announced for the 3rd annual Art on the Atlanta BeltLine

ATLANTA --  Art on the Atlanta Beltline returns this fall as Atlanta’s largest temporary public art exhibition, showcasing the work of new and returning, established and emerging visual artists, performers, and musicians along nine miles of the Atlanta BeltLine on both the east and west sides of town. The third annual Art on the Atlanta BeltLine uses varied and dynamic art installations to draw the public onto some of the most unique public spaces in the City of Atlanta, providing powerful new perspectives on the city and its vibrant neighborhoods. The exhibition will open on Saturday, September 8, kicking off with the Krewe of the Grateful Glutton’s Lantern Parade beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of Lake Avenue / Irwin Street and the Eastside Trail. The two-month long exhibition will feature free outdoor performances over seven weekends beginning Saturday, September 15 through Sunday, November 11.

Fulton County Seeks Resident Input Regarding Transportation Projects for Unincorporated Fulton

Fulton County residents are invited to attend a series of upcoming community meetings to provide input regarding transportation projects for unincorporated Fulton County.

Meetings are scheduled as follows:

  • Tuesday, June 26, 6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. – Cliftondale Community Center, 4645 Butner Road, College Park
  •  Thursday, June 28, 6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. – Burdett Park, 2945 Burdett Park, College Park
  •  Tuesday, July 10, 6:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. – Southwest Library, 3665 Southwest Library, Atlanta
  • Thursday, July 12, 6:30 p.m. – 8: 30 p.m. – Renaissance Middle School, 7155 Hall Road, Fairburn

The purpose of the meetings will be to discuss transportation needs in unincorporated Fulton County and to develop a project list for consideration by the Fulton County Board of Commissioners.

'B at the Movies' this summer

'B at the Movies' this summer

ATLANTA -- Looking for some free family fun this summer?

ALDI and radio station B98.5 will present the "B at the Movies" outdoor movie series at several locations throughout metro Atlanta all summer long.

Everyone is invited to bring their blankets and chairs to the participating parks and watch the family-friendly movies on giant inflatable screens. Movies begin at dusk, but come out early for activities and giveaways.

BeltLine prepares to open trail

BeltLine prepares to open trail

ATLANTA -- Construction crews will spend part of June working on the next major component of the Atlanta BeltLine slated to open to the public.

The Eastside Trail project spans more than two miles from the southeast tip of Piedmont Park to Inman Park and the Old Fourth Ward neighborhoods. It includes a 14-foot wide trail for walking, running, biking and skating.

A section of Ponce de Leon Avenue will be closed for two weekends while the work is completed. The closures will occur the weekends of June 8 and June 15, starting at 9 p.m. on Fridays and reopening by 5 a.m. Mondays.
