BeltLine Street Cup soccer tournament to be held this weekend

ATLANTA -- The next Atlanta BeltLine Street Cup will be held this weekend at northeast Atlanta's Historic Fourth Ward Skatepark.

Children of all ages are invited to participate in the games, which will take place Saturday, Feb. 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event is sponsored by the Atlanta BeltLine Partnership and Soccer in the Streets.

"The Atlanta BeltLine Street Cup is a component of the free health programming the Atlanta BeltLine Partnership is offering to engage the community in healthy, active lifestyles through partnerships with other health-centric organizations such as Soccer in the Streets," Atlanta BeltLine program director Rob Brawner said in a release. "We are excited to offer fun, exciting ways to get Atlantans moving."

Fulton County Cooperative Extension sponsors free workshop for budding entrepreneurs

ATLANTA -- Have you ever considered starting your own home-based business? Fulton County Cooperative Extension will sponsor a free workshop on Starting a Home-Based Business on Tuesday, Sept. 24 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System’s Central Library, 1 Margaret Mitchell Square, Suite 109, Atlanta.

Participants will gain valuable information to help them start and maintain a successful home-based business. Specific topics will include how to identify fraud and scams billed as business opportunities, space and time needs, identifying factors that contribute to success and much more.  

Fulton County Cooperative Extension hosts monthly classes on a variety of topics such as nutrition, financial management, diabetes and gardening. Classes are held in locations throughout the county.  Call 404-332-2400 for more information.

ATLANTA -- Atlanta's favorite Earth Day celebration will once again grace Candler Park in April.

The 9th annual SweetWater 420 Festival will begin Friday, Apr. 19 and includes plenty of fun for everyone, such as activities, live music, food trucks, a Kid Zone and, of course, SweetWater beer.

"SweetWater 420 Fest is a unique opportunity for us to blend entertainment with environmental awareness for the entire community to come together and enjoy," festival promoter Jennifer Bensch said in a statement. ATLANTA -- Fulton County Voters can “Vote and Vax” beginning Saturday, October 27, 2012.  Voters can cast their ballots and obtain their annual flu slots as a part of an effort to reduce the risk of flu among citizens.  Vote and Vax primarily targets adults aged 50 or older.

Fulton wants seniors to 'Join the Conversation' regarding strategies to meet growing senior needs

ATLANTA -- The Fulton County Housing and Human Services Department, Office of Aging wants seniors and their caregivers to participate in focus groups designed to plan strategies for meeting the growing needs of seniors.  The focus group meetings are designed to plan strategies to help seniors to age-in- place and maintain their independence.  Caregivers of more fragile seniors are also urged to participate in the conversations about program and service needs.

The Office of Aging will host four “Join the Conversation” meetings beginning  Monday, October 22, 2012.  The meetings will be held on the following dates:

Fulton County’s Helene S. Mills Senior Multipurpose Facility celebrates 10th anniversary

ATLANTA -- The Helene S. Mills Senior Multipurpose Facility is celebrating 10 years of service to Intown Atlanta Seniors.  The Fulton County facility, named for Atlanta native and community activist Helene S. Mills, opened on Tuesday, September 17, 2002.

A 10th Anniversary celebration scheduled for Friday, September 21, 2012 from 7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. will feature an elegant evening of dining and dancing.  The Mills Senior Multipurpose Facility is located at 515 John Wesley Dobbs Avenue, Atlanta, Georgia. 

Open from 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, the facility offers a low cost breakfast and lunch, classes and social activities, aerobics/arthritis therapy, aquatics and other services that enrich the minds, bodies and spirits of seniors age 55 and over.  All Fulton County seniors are eligible to use the facility regardless of where they live.
