Cooperative extension available to help navigate health insurance marketplace

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Fulton County Cooperative Extension welcomes the UGA Cooperative Extension Health Navigator to provide one-on-one sessions for individuals and families who need assistance enrolling in a health insurance plan through the national Health Insurance Marketplace.

Interested persons should allot one hour for an appointment session. Call 404-613-7670 to schedule an appointment.

The Health Navigator, housed under UGA Cooperative Extension, is able to help residents decide on the best health insurance to meet their needs. The Navigator will also help them apply, either electronically or by paper; establish eligibility; enroll in coverage and to potentially qualify for an insurance affordability program.

Fulton County reminds ctizens about dangers of exposure to extreme cold

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- With the current conditions of ice and show in metro Atlanta, the Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness and the Atlanta Fulton County Emergency Management Agency (AFCEMA) are warning citizens about the dangers of exposure to extreme cold.

Exposure to cold temperatures can cause serious or life-threatening health problems. Infants and the elderly are particularly at risk, but the lives of animals can also be at risk.
 
"In severe weather conditions where the temperature drops very low causing extreme cold, we strongly advise citizens to try to stay indoors," said Dr. Patrice Harris, Director of Health and Wellness. “These conditions can lead to hypothermia and frostbite if citizens are not careful to limit trips outside and remember to take the necessary steps to be prepared for winter emergencies thereby reducing the risks of weather-related health problems.”

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Fulton County Commission Chairman, District 1, John H. Eaves received the Grady Champion Award during the 2nd Annual “Honoring Healthcare Champions Awards.”

Chairman Eaves was one of eight community leaders, medical professionals and non-profit executives honored by the Hospital Authority for their leadership in efforts to support Grady Hospital and build healthier communities.

The awards dinner followed the 2013 Health Summit, which brought governmental leaders and healthcare professionals together to discuss healthcare issues affecting Fulton and Dekalb counties.

The Healthcare Champions were honored for research, advocacy, donations and inspired leadership.  Standing with Chairman Eaves (center) were Pete Correll (left), Chairman of the Grady Memorial Hospital Corporation and Thomas Dortch, Chairman of the Fulton-Dekalb Hospital Authority Board of Trustees.

ATLANTA -- Fulton County Cooperative Extension will offer Affordable Care Act information sessions to assist residents, small businesses and their employees through the new Healthcare Marketplace.

Interested parties are encouraged to register for a free information session that will be led by a University of Georgia (UGA) health navigator assigned to Fulton County to assist with helping individuals and small businesses complete eligibility and enrollment forms during. Residents should call (404) 332-2400 to register for a session.

Fulton's Fall SPARC Atlanta Clinics seek to enhance the health and quality of life for older adults

ATLANTA -- Fulton County’s Fall SPARC (Sickness Prevention Achieved through Regional Collaboration) Atlanta preventive healthcare screenings for older adults begin on Tuesday, Sept. 24.

Citizens who participate in SPARC Atlanta clinics can take advantage of health screenings, nutrition counseling and health education. Since the initiation of SPARC Atlanta in 2006, more than 7,300 older adults have visited SPARC Clinics to obtain health screenings as well as obtain information regarding Medicare Assistance, employment assistance, Food Stamp Assistance, nutrition education and dental education.
