Students and Parents Encouraged to Attend College Fair on Tuition Assistance

Atlanta, GA--  Councilman Aaron Watson and School Board member, Yolanda Johnson have teamed up with The Scholarship Academy in an effort to help Atlanta students and parents secure funding for college.  The "I am College Material" Fair will take place on Wednesday 11/17 from 4pm-8pm at the Atrium in Atlanta City Hall.

The Federal Pell Grant and Georgia HOPE are both facing major shortages in the coming years, and the councilman want families to start planning now for their educational futures.

The Scholarship Academy is a local nonprofit scholarship preparatory program that has launched this "I am College Material" Scholarship Fair.  

The event will introduce “average students” to the private scholarship application process.

Fourth Ward Alliance November Pot Luck ---More Dishes Needed

Atlanta, GA--  Just a reminder that the FWA November meeting this Thursday, November 11th will be a social event, our first Pre-Holiday Pot Luck. We are having it at the 660 Ralph McGill Apartments LINK <http://www.660apts.com/map-directions.html>  A few people have responded to bring something, but we need more people to help out with bringing a dish to the event! If you are not one to cook but would like to chip in, feel free to pick something up from Whole Foods, Publix, etc. or bring a little something from one of the many great restaurants in 04W. Bullying is at an All-Time High, The Geek Squad has some Vital Tips

Atlanta, GA--  A report released by the National Institutes of Health found that kids who are victims of cyber bullying are at a higher risk of depression.  Cyber bullying is defined as the use of e-mail, instant messaging, chat rooms, pagers/cell phones or any other form of technology to communicate offensive, violent or harassing messages to a victim.  The prevalence of bullying is high, with 20.8 percent of U.S. adolescents in school having been bullied physically at least once in the last two months, 53.6 percent having been bullied verbally, and 51.4 percent bullied socially (excluded or ostracized), and 13.6 percent having been bullied electronically.

Listed below are four easy tips, provided by Geek Squad, to help keep kids safe from cyber bullies.

Free Entrance to The High Museum of Art this Saturday, Sept. 25th. See Salvador Dali for Free!

Atlanta, GA--  On Saturday, September 25, 2010, the High will participate in the sixth annual Smithsonian Museum Day, presented by Toyota on behalf of the redesigned 2011 Avalon. The High will join participating museums and cultural institutions nationwide to open their doors free of charge to all visitors who download the Museum Day Ticket from www.smithsonian.com.

Visitors to the High can view “Salvador Dali: The Late Work,” “Signs of Life: Photographs by Peter Sekaer” and the museum’s permanent collection.

The Museum Day Ticket is available to download at www.smithsonian.com/museumday. Visitors who present the official pass will gain free admission for two people to participating museums and cultural venues. One ticket is permitted per household, per email address.

Atlanta Fire Stations 16 and 19 Host the 6th Annual FireED Up! Run/Walk for Higher Education

Atlanta, GA--  Atlanta Fire Rescue Department Fire Stations 16 and 19 are hosting the annual 5k race to help give scholarships to graduating seniors of Washington and Grady High Schools.

Through hosting the Christmas party at Fire Station 16, and the FirEd Up! 5K Race at Fire Station 19 many children have benefited from what have become anticipated annual events for the department.

Atlanta Mom Inventor Wins $15,000 Grant from Huggies

Atlanta, GA--  Kimberly Clark's Huggies brand has awarded Atlanta resident, Dr. Amy Baxter with 1 of its 12 $15,000 grants aimed to help fund and resource and "innovative, real-world product idea."

Selected from almost 400 applications, Dr. Baxter successfully demonstrated her unique childcare product idea to make life easier for moms and dads.  The Huggies MomInspired Grant Program was created to provide the resources and seed capital for moms to either turn turn their great ideas inspired by personal motherhood experience into successful businesses or help take their existing businesses to the next level.
