Debut author to read at A Cappella Books

ATLANTA -- A new novelist will read from her first book at A Cappella Books later this month.

Dale Kushner decided to write her debut novel, The Conditions of Love, while pursuing her MFA. She signed up for a poetry program, but soon switched to fiction after realizing she had a story to tell.

Kushner will read from and sign copies of The Conditions of Love at the Inman Park bookstore's Reading Room on Monday, June 23 at 7 p.m. 

A Cappella Books provided this synopsis of the novel:

In 1953, 10-year-old Eunice lives in the rural backwaters of Wisconsin with her mother, a manicureeste and movie star worshipper. Abandoned by her father, Eunice worries that she will share her mother's fate and become a misfit.

Fulton County Aviation Community Cultural Center to open June 19

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Fulton County Commissioner Emma I. Darnell, District 5, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners and Fulton County Arts and Culture, will celebrate the Grand Opening of the Fulton County Aviation Community Cultural Center (ACCC) on Thursday, June 19 at 10 a.m.

The grand opening celebration will kick off three days of activities organized to introduce the new facility to the community and increase awareness of the center, its programming and activities. 

The center is located at 3900 Aviation Circle, Atlanta on the grounds of Fulton County Airport – Brown Field.  It is designed as a community gathering place and will focus on the following types of programming:

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Stress management and mental health discussions are planned during the first week in June at two Fulton County senior multipurpose facilities.

The Dorothy C. Benson Senior Multipurpose Complex will host a mental health workshop sponsored by the Renaissance on Peachtree on Thursday, June 5. The discussion will be facilitated by Leslie Sessley, a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) with the Link Counseling Center. The two-hour presentation begins at 10 a.m.  The Benson Multipurpose Complex is located at 6500 Vernon Woods Drive in Sandy Springs.  For more information about this event, citizens should contact Lila Womack, Life Enrichment Coordinator at 404-613-4900.

David Sedaris to attend A Cappella Books block party

David Sedaris to attend A Cappella Books block party

ATLANTA -- Famed essayist and NPR contributor David Sedaris will celebrate the paperback release of his latest collection, Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls, at A Cappella Books later this month.

Sedaris will be the guest of honor at a block party hosted by the Inman Park bookstore. The fun will be Monday, June 16 at 7 p.m. Several local vendors will provide refreshments, including Pallookaville, Pull Coffee and King of Pops.

The reading is free, but attendees must purchase a copy of Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls through A Cappella Books to enter the signing line and meet Sedaris. The book is $17.

Seniors tour Wheat Street Gardens during 'Celebrating Seniors Garden Party'

ATLANTA -- Fulton County Seniors from senior centers across Atlanta and Fulton County enjoyed a “Celebrating Seniors Garden Party” as May Older Americans Month activities continued on Thursday, May 22.

The “Garden Party” featured lunch, games, healthy cooking demonstrations and tours of Wheat Street Gardens, a beautiful network of flower and vegetable gardens. The party was hosted by Open Hand and Truly Living Well and supported by Fulton County District 6 Commissioner Joan P. Garner, Atlanta City Councilmember Kwanza Hall, State Senator Nan Orrock and local businesses.

Open Hand provides congregate and home-delivered meals along with nutrition education to Fulton County seniors through the Housing and Human Services Department, Office of Aging.

Young authors to hold conversation at Mother

ATLANTA -- Author John Brandon and Georgia State University professor Josh Russell will team up for a reading and conversation in Atlanta next week.

The two will be at Mother in the Old Fourth Ward on Thursday, June 5 at 7 p.m.

Brandon is the author of three novels and recently published his first short story collection, Further Joy. The book contains 11 stories and "a stunning assortment of men and women at the edge of possibility-gamblers and psychics, wanderers and priests, all of them on the verge of finding out what they can get away with, and what they can't," according to A Cappella Books in Inman Park, which is sponsoring the reading.

Russell is co-director of GSU's creative writing program. He is also a prize-winning novelist and short story writer.

Copies of both men's books will be available for purchase and signing at the event.

7 Stages to host panel on bullying

7 Stages to host panel on bullying

ATLANTA -- 7 Stages is doing its part to battle bullying in Atlanta schools.

The northeast Atlanta theater will host Private to Public: The Art of Activism, a conversation about bullying. Panelists Melissa Carter, Theresa Davis, Topher Payne and Scott Turner Schofield will introduce 7 Stages' bullying prevention project on Wednesday, May 28 at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets to the panel range in price from $10 to $15, with proceeds going toward the project's development. The event is recommended for people who are at least 12 years old.

7 Stages' proposed project will bring theater representatives into local schools, where they will use artistic expression to help students find their voices and overcome the insecurities that come with bullying.
