7 Stages presents 'The Doctor, The Devil, & My Dad'

ATLANTA -- The Doctor, The Devil, & My Dad, a new work from Atlanta playwright Suehyla El-Attar, will premiere at 7 Stages Theatre next month.

The play examines the possibility that fictional characters -- in books, video games and even religious parables -- actually exist in an alternate universe. Lead character Summer considers these ideas while grappling with the loss of her father.

"This is an extremely personal story for me and a self-discovery of how there are various ways to grieve, to heal," El-Attar said. "Mine is delving into stories, seeing other worlds."

El-Attar is a longtime friend to 7 Stages; she has been one of the theatre's Artistic Associates for a number of years and has also participated in Youth Creates, its training program for teens.

"It is an honor to finally offer my friend and collaborator a space to create and connect her own life to our work," 7 Stages Artistic Director Heidi S. Howard said in a release.

Howard called The Doctor, The Devil, & My Dad a true story, saying, "We can all relate to losing a father, a mother, a child or a loved one. Though common, it still remains to be one of the most painful experiences of life -- a universal experience of grief."

Preview performances will be held Thursday, Oct. 3 and Friday, Oct. 3. Tickets are $18 in advance and $20 at the door.

The show will run through Sunday, Oct. 26. Admission is $22.50 in advance and $25 at the door.
