Atlanta Public Schools Neighborhood Celebration Set for Oct. 2nd

Atlanta, GA-- The second APS Neighborhood Celebration is scheduled for 1 – 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2 at Maynard Holbrook Jackson High School.

The event, which is part pep rally and open house, celebrates and showcases APS neighborhood schools through displays and performances created by school staff and students from southeast Atlanta.

Atlanta Fire Stations 16 and 19 Host the 6th Annual FireED Up! Run/Walk for Higher Education

Atlanta, GA--  Atlanta Fire Rescue Department Fire Stations 16 and 19 are hosting the annual 5k race to help give scholarships to graduating seniors of Washington and Grady High Schools.

Through hosting the Christmas party at Fire Station 16, and the FirEd Up! 5K Race at Fire Station 19 many children have benefited from what have become anticipated annual events for the department.

A New Atlanta Foundation Awards $90,000 in Grants to Support Arts Criticism in Atlanta

Atlanta, GA-- The new Atlanta-based foundation Possible Futures has awarded $90,000 in grants to support critical dialogue about the arts. Awards of $30,000 each will be made to the online arts magazines ArtsCriticATL.com and BURNAWAY.org and to veteran Atlanta arts writer Jerry Cullum.

“BURNAWAY and ArtsCriticATL have stepped up over the last two years to fill a void in the city’s arts coverage,” said investment analyst Louis Corrigan, an Atlanta native and founder of Possible Futures. “In their different ways, each is providing a crucial community service.”

Possible Futures is a private non-profit operating foundation. Its mission is to nurture Atlanta’s creative culture and educate the public through the support and presentation of artists, writers and performers.

“The arts are an essential expression of our humanity, and thus their own end,” said Corrigan.

Atlanta Mom Inventor Wins $15,000 Grant from Huggies

Atlanta, GA--  Kimberly Clark's Huggies brand has awarded Atlanta resident, Dr. Amy Baxter with 1 of its 12 $15,000 grants aimed to help fund and resource and "innovative, real-world product idea."

Selected from almost 400 applications, Dr. Baxter successfully demonstrated her unique childcare product idea to make life easier for moms and dads.  The Huggies MomInspired Grant Program was created to provide the resources and seed capital for moms to either turn turn their great ideas inspired by personal motherhood experience into successful businesses or help take their existing businesses to the next level.

Free Standardized Test Prep

According to a report released Monday, the average score for the state’s public, private and home school students fell for the fourth straight year.

To try and intercept this issue, the Atlanta City Council President Ceasar C. Mitchell and Kaplan are offering a free college entrance exam preparation series. This year is the programs 9th year.

This year Georgia saw its largest and most diverse group ever of graduating seniors take the SAT, the most widely used entrance exam for in-state colleges and universities. The SAT participation rate for the Georgia class of 2010 was 74 percent, ranking Georgia among the top 10 in the nation, state officials said.

Register Early for Hands On Atlanta Day and Win a Chance to Work with Atlanta Falcons

Atlanta, GA--  Registration for 20th Annual Hands On Atlanta Day, one of the largest single-day volunteer efforts in the country, is now open to individuals, families and groups. As many as 10,000 volunteers will participate in service projects throughout metro-Atlanta, renovating public schools, taking part in environmental projects, making much needed repairs to seniors’ homes, and much more. This year’s Hands On Atlanta Day is presented by GE.

Registration is $5 for adults and is free for youths under 18 years of age.  Event proceeds support Hands On Atlanta’s volunteer programs.

Registrants who sign up by September 17 and are at least 18 years old will be entered in a drawing from which 25 lucky participants will be randomly selected to participate in an additional service day with the Atlanta Falcons this spring.

In addition, two of the winning 25 will each receive two round-trip, coach tickets to anywhere AirTran flies.
